Kid dies and family is asking for money?

A kid in my town died and I don't know anything about the death other than it was an accident. There is a restaurant in town holding a fundraiser for the family and is charging a "donation fee"(exact quote) of $10 dollars. There is also a bank account set up for them. He didn't have any diseases and I'm not sure what they need money for if he is already buried. The money is said to go directly to the family..I might sound insensitive, but why do they want money?
